The first lines he uttered when we got to see him for the first time were that he ‘didn’t like the colour of his kidneys’ and that he pretty much didn’t know how to fly the TARDIS. Do we sense a case of the memory-loss here? Will he be more kick-ass and dark the way Eccleston’s Nine was?
Speculating is all fun and games, but what do we already know?
Steven Moffat has said:
“He’s going to give us a whole new kind of Doctor. We’ve got used to two brilliant iterations of the younger, more popular Doctor and they have both been superlative, but now it’s time for the old beast to snarl at you for a bit! Sometimes you see that a bit in Matt Smith’s Doctor. He will remind the people around him, ‘I’m not really like this.’ But I think Peter’s Doctor will make that even clearer.”
A snarling old beast huh? Sounds promising! Personally I’ve always found Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Doctor to show just how old the Timelord really was. He had old eyes. Played it perfectly. So the fact that there’s supposedly such an age gap between Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, isn’t a problem at all as far as I’m concerned! Or as Peter himself stated:
“I’m 1,995 years too young to play him, really. So I think he’s going to be quite happy to look his age.”
Well said sir, well said!
What others have said about Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor:
Chris Addison, Peter Capaldi’s ‘The Thick of It’ -former co-star said : “I think they’ve all been great since it came back. But what I’ve really missed is the mercurial, unknowable, frightening side of the Doctor, and Peter will give it that, I bet you anything. I never quite felt that any of the ones we’ve seen since 2005 could be imperious. That’s a note that’s missing from the scale at the moment. And I think Peter will bring that back.”
Mark Gatiss: “I saw a little of Peter Capaldi in action and he is wonderful. I think it will be very exciting for everyone, because it is a more dangerous, more urgent Doctor. It has a side of crazy.”
With summer just around the corner, the upcoming season becomes almost tangible. Set pictures surface every now and then, giving us a vague yet satisfying peek into what’s to come. We’ve been given promotional pictures of the Doctor’s look, and even got to celebrate the arrival of a new recurring character: Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School (the school where Clara teaches as well). As to what Danny Pink will bring to the show? There has been many speculation including him being the new companion, or even a love interest for Clara (à la Amy & Rory). I’m hoping it won’t be something that obvious, but then again, you never know with Doctor Who.
So…we’ve seen some set pics, know that ‘Robots of Sherwood’ is a thing, and that we’ll have more fun with the Paternoster Gang early on in the new series. We all can’t wait for the new series to start! And we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any more Doctor Who related updates!
